Depending on how diluted the mixture is, a wash will often bead up when it is applied to a nonabsorbent surface. This effect can be very interesting. But it is important to realize that highly diluting acrylic paint with water causes the binder to break down. Conventionally, it is ill advised. However, experimental surfaces achieved with highly diluted paint often adhere surprisingly well. For added stability, surfaces can be sealed with subsequent layers of glaze to help improve overall adhesion to the support.

They are ideal to use as glue for collage, especially on textured materials. Regular Gels have the same consistency as heavy bodied acrylics and are therefore perfect for extending heavy bodied paints, increasing their transparency, and modifying their sheen without altering their consistency. Heavy and Extra Heavy Gels add thickness and body to paint, will hold peaks for impasto effects, and will generally increase the appearance of brushstrokes and marks made with palette knives. Self Leveling Clear Gel has a resinous consistency that flattens out and dries to a clear, glossy, flexible film.

Glazes can be used to alter the sheen of a painting, or a portion of a painting, as well as the viscosity or working consistency of paint. Golden Self Leveling Clear Gel, for example, can be used to mix a glaze that flattens out as it dries, eliminating brushstrokes.
