From the time I entered the stadium until I arrived back at my dorm, I was part of an athletic system finely tuned for producing a national championship team. Even in the off season (spring and summer), football remained at center stage. For me, it was a challenge to keep much physical or mental energy in reserve to concentrate on schoolwork. Even with the awesome demands of football, however, I always viewed myself as a student first, and I felt like an integral part of the student body. I did not need the hyphenated term “student-athlete” to remind me why I was in college.

Rhoads was able to fill in for me, and he played a great game even though his shoulder was still hurting. We beat Oklahoma 38–0, the worst Oklahoma defeat in twenty-one years. Notre Dame had come into the Oklahoma game ranked number one and had no trouble staying at the top of the rankings for the next three weeks. I missed most of the Navy game because of my injury. We won 31–7. We cruised past Pittsburgh 40–0 and annihilated Duke 64–0. Against Duke, everyone who dressed for the game played. These teams simply did not have the depth that Notre Dame did.
