L’Ottocento italiano si può chiudere idealmente con La danza delle Ore di Gaetano Previati (Ferrara 1852 - Lavagna, Genova 1920), artista maestro del simbolismo italiano, che proseguirà la sua attività ben oltre il secolo, anche grazie a un fervido impegno di teorico della pittura e di trattatista. L’opera, presentata alla Biennale di Venezia del 1899, è tutta concentrata sul movimento circolare, quasi in competizione con la fotografia e il cinema.
