This determines the maximum thickness of the pieces you can cut. As with most purchases, choosing a band saw depends on a series of compromises. You need to balance the amount of space you have to devote to a band saw against the size of the pieces you intend to cut against the depth of your pockets. The small 9″ saw shown in the photo is a great choice for a small shop. It is reasonably priced and will cut stock up to about 1″ thick with ease. It can cut thicker material, but if you intend to cut a lot of heavy stock, you are going to want a saw with a little more power.
Counterbore the holes in the top so the bolt heads will be recessed beneath the surface. Dado the top for the miter gauge track. Measure carefully, or you may have to add a patch piece like I did (d'uh). Screw the track in place with short (3/8″) screws. Screw the mounting cleat to the base. Drill holes through the base/cleat so you can bolt the unit to the saw. Drill matching holes through the top so you can actually tighten the mounting bolts. Carefully cut an access slot in from the back edge so you can mount the unit on your saw.
If the opening begins to tear, simply push the piece a little further, cutting into fresh material. Start by attaching the workpiece to an extension board with double-sided tape or hot glue. If you use tape, a gentle squeeze with a clamp will make the joint more secure. Once the piece is securely attached to the extension, you can cut as you usually do. Note, by placing the extension carefully, you may be able to use it as a guide in conjunction with the fence. chapter two making curved cuts WHILE THE BAND SAW DOES A GOOD job of making straight cuts, where it really shines is cutting curves.
