Yet, by rendering oneself vulnerable, one risks that loss of life that is most feared. Hobbes’s position takes on a subtlety, though, when he admits that it is just this sense of trust that is absolutely crucial for cooperation and commerce, and that trust is also crucial for overcoming the miserable conditions of the state of nature. 32 It seems reasonable to argue that if Hobbes rejects the desirability of first performance to the social contract, he should also be opposed to the attitudes of cooperation and trust that are essential to an international rule of law.
